vc, *1973
Musician of World and Jazz
He was born in 1973 in Athens, Greece, and was raised in a musical family. He attended the Athenaeum Conservatoire in Athens, where he received his Diploma under the guidance of the cellist Claire Demeulenaere. The scholarship from the "Fulbright Foundation", in 2002, granted him the chance to develop his personal technique on the instrument and to study composition and improvisation under the guidance of Ted Greene in Los Angeles. He established the "Faros" duo, in 2003, with the saxophone player and composer David Lynch. On February of 2005, "DNA LAB_L records" released Yiorgos's debut solo CD album, "Truth". The second album called "On the Wind" was released in September of 2009, with the kind support of The J. F. Costopoulos Foundation. Yiorgos performs his compositions in duet with Ruth Hill on the kanun, using the technique of "live-loop recording". He uses his personal technique and different timbres of the instrument to produce a modern ambient environment with classical and jazz elements. His concerts take place in Europe. More recently, as influenced by his Cretan background, he has added the Cretan lyra to his performances bringing to it his technical understandings of the cello techniques and also the innovative addition of a fifth string, the low C of the cello. For the last decade, he has collaborated in the projects of the songwriter Alkinoos Ioannidis, giving concerts all around the world. He currently collaborates with Steve Tavaglione, Sylvan Richardson, Stavros Lantsias, David Lynch, Takis Farazis, and the groups "Analogue", "Furtuna", "Faros", and "The Chosen".
