Musical matrices like this one are always there to inspire us, to connect us to the present and to open the space for the meeting of the musical with the real time in the field of improvisation and re-creation. Two instruments with different origins meet up for the first time here in the realm of the musical intimacy engendered by the rembetiko music: on the one hand the guitar as a rembetiko classical instrument echoes its western drifts; on the other the yayli tanbur as an emblematic instrument of Istanbul music echoes the eastern sound of the pre-war rembetiko. What guided us in this project, however, was not the ambition of having these two instruments playing together for the first time. Neither was our ambition to adopt a narrow, bygone we tend to believe, approach that sees rembetiko as a genre that is there to be simply revitalised. Having as our guide the musicality of this genre, a musicality that does not allow claims to collogue, we submitted to its inspiration; we met in imagined damp, smoky and dark, low dives to whisper their stories with our music.
