A.k.a. Алексей Александрович Николаев (Aleksei Alexandrovich Nikolayev)
Alexey Nikolaev (1931–2003) was a Russian-Soviet composer, pianist and music educator, People's Artist of the RSFSR (1985), professor at the Moscow Conservatory. He studied composition with Vissarion Shebalin at the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1956 and receving PhD degree three years later. The composer worked in various genres and composed eight operas, numerous song cycles on lyrics by Marina Tsvetayeva, Ivan Bunin, Evgeny Baratynskij, Petr Vyazemsky, Fyodor Tyutchev, Nikolai Zabolotski and other prominent Russian poets, three string quartets, as well as other compositions. Nikolaev also wrote Concert for Flute (1992), Piano Trio (1993), Cello (1994), Violin (1995), and Oboe (1996). He received various prestigious awards, including the prize at the Sergei Prokofiev International Competition (1997) for his Concert for Two Pianos and the Orchestra, Glinka State Prize (1980) for the Fifth Symphony, and Dmitri Shostakovich Prize from the Union of Russian Composers in 2001.
