The Studio for New Music (SNM) is an ensemble-in-residence at the Moscow Conservatory and one of the leading contemporary music groups in Russia, founded in 1993 by composer Vladimir Tarnopolski and conductor Igor Dronov. SNM gave concerts at Berliner Philharmonie, Paradiso Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Berlin, Jacqueline Du Pré Music Room, Cité de la Musique, Arnold Schönberg Center, and Festspielhaus Hellerau. They toured in the USA several times and organized workshops at the Oxford University, Harvard University, and Boston University. The ensemble premiered works by Pierre Boulez, Brian Ferneyhough, Gérard Grisey, Philippe Hurel, Helmut Lachenmann, György Ligeti, Tristan Murail, Wolfgang Rihm, Luigi Nono, and Karlheinz Stockhausen in Russia. Many composers wrote especially for the Studio for New Music Ensemble, including Ivan Fedele, Nicolaus A. Huber, Enno Poppe, and Roger Redgate. The group also specializes in the Russian avant-garde of the 1920s, performing music of Gavriil Popov, Nikolai Roslavetz, and Alexander Mossolov. SNM gave a world premiere of Roslavetz' Chamber Symphony No. 2, written in 1934 and recently discovered in the archives. In 2002, 2005 and 2012, Studio for New Music Ensemble won prestigious grants from the Ernst von Siemens Foundation for Music to organize two-year concert anthologies. They received a grant from European Commission for a large-scale Europe through the Eyes of Russians / Russia through the Eyes of Europeans project in 2010. SNM also became the first Russian ensemble-in-residence at the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt.
