THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN - The text corresponds to Synodal edition ------------- Producer E. Reznikova Recording engineer L. Dolzhnikov Editor T. Tarnovskaya Cover design by N. Chelmakova ------------ This is what everybody needs. Whoever seeks faith needs to hear the Word of God, for, according to Paul the Apostle, "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ". Christ's behest such people was: "Search the scriptures". To those who come to believe, the Lord said: "If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My dis¬ciples indeed" (St. John, 8, 31), to those who fear they could err by reading the Gospel, you can say with the words of Christ: "Ye do err, not kno¬wing the scriptures, nor the power of God". (St. Matthew. 22, 29). The more the people know and recognize the Gospel, the more their religion induces them to do this, the higher are their cultural standards. "You should interpret the Gospel to the people all the time", says Dostoyevsky's Zosima. "The peop¬le will perish without the word of God, because the soul of man longs for His Word and all won-derful perception". I asked a soldier in the days of pogroms at the beginning of the Russian revolution: "Is it this that Christ has taught you in the Gospel?" "But have we ever read it? We just kissed the cover of the Gospel, but we don't know what is written in it." Indeed "the people shall perish without the Word of God". Adrian Yugsky said to those who are afraid of going mad by, reading the Bible: "The Bible will drive your mind off from secular to spiritual." "If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wi¬se", so advised Paul the Apostle (I. Corinthians, 3, 18). It is worth and necessary passing over from our secular, frivolous, short-sighted and callously cruel mind to that of Christ, creating, breathing with love and penetrating the mysteries of eter¬nity! The Word of God is the only unshakable wall in the sea of human words, in the world of relati¬vity and conflicting theories and suppositions. And it is not surprising that, when the audience, including materialists, in a schoolarly assembly in France was asked "What book would you take into solitary confinement?", the answer was "the Gospel".
