Варлам Шаламов (in English: Varlam Shalamov; 1907—1982) was a Russian writer, poet and journalist of the Soviet period. He served almost 20 years in prison camps of the GULag, 14 of them in Kolyma region of the Russian Far East. He is widely known for the book Kolyma Tales, a series of short stories based on his labor camp experiences.
