Ivan Salmaksov (July 11, 1970 – ??) was a prominent Russian DJ and pioneering club promoter, one of the key figures in the early days of rave/club scene in Russia. Born in the closed town of Zheleznogorsk (Krasnoyarsk-26), he spent his formative years in Saint Petersburg. In 1990, Salmaksov was one of the founders of Tanzpol (Танцпол, which means dancefloor in Russian) – the first underground nightclub playing electronic dance music in post-USSR, which was based at a now legendary studio/workshop/squat Fontanka, 145 in St-Petersburg. He also co-organized first large-scale raves in the country: Gagarin Party (Dec 1991) at the Cosmos hall at VDNKh, and Mobilee (Apr 1992) at Krylatskoye Velodrome. He continued organizing events in Moscow and launched a weekly party at a newly opened Manhattan-Express club in 1993. From 1994 to '95, Salmaksov worked as a producer at Ptuch Club and was actively involved in the early days of Ptuch Sound System. Since 1994, Ivan Salmaksov started performing as a deejay and had quickly gained a solid reputation as one of the leading performers in the country, praised by colleagues and critics for his exquisite taste, technical skills, and in-depth knowledge of underground techno and house labels from around the world. Salmaksov was producing Bogdan Titomir in 1993–94, even though most of the material they recorded together wasn’t released. He also produced several remixes for pop artists. Salmaksov worked as a music director of SubStation 69.26 VHF radio station, which was broadcasting from December 1996 to July 1997 in partnership with a legendary Station 106.8 FM. In 1997, he released his first ‘official’ Allegro.mix CD, a critically acclaimed inaugural release on Gagarin Music label. He continued organizing several high-profile parties and events in Moscow and received a Golden Ptuch '98 award as Promoter of the Year. At the beginning of September 1998, Ivan Salmaksov disappeared without a trace. A foul play was immediately suspected since some blood traces were found at the hallway of his apartment building, and his body was never recovered.
