Artist Portrait

Abbey Cindi

fl,
Singer of World, Jazz and Folk

South African jazz flautist, harmonica player, vocalist and songwriter. She has contributed to the formation of the Group Malopoets Abbey Cindi, who, back in the 1970s, pioneered Malombo sounds alongside Philip Tabane. Cindi's own work as leader is less well known, but in fact he guested at the Bracknell and London Jazz Festivals in the 1980s, and led several bands, including Afrika. His 1985 album, January-December Emgodini (dealing with the plight of migrant mineworkers) has the distinction of being instantly banned by the SABC on release.
