Flare: verb (used without object) 3. to start up or burst out in sudden, fierce activity, passion, etc. FLARES, Alexa Borden’s second full-length and self-produced album (Released January 21st, 2013) is a record about escaping out of the confinements one has caged themself in. Drawing inspiration from the dark rocky mountain forests and vast west coast shores, Borden spent weeks throughout the past two years writing by the magnificent lakes of Hope, Idaho and secluded in the thick woods where the 14 original songs were conceived. Borden’s concept of FLARES was in response to her realization of a loss of innocence. “The inspiration directly came from stepping back and taking a look at myself from a distance. I realized I had lost that child-like spark, I lost my youth. And I was sad. I feared that change in myself and so I shut myself out. But when I started writing…the songs that resulted allowed me hear my own cry for help. I wanted to build a landscape of music where people could come to retreat and break free of their personal constraints and fears as well.” Alexa describes FLARES as more industrial, although the record is still evidently influenced heavily by the connection Borden has with nature. “There is beauty in people, in experiences and in love.” says Borden “But I like to draw from the beauty in natural things as well…from mountains, from rivers and seas- it's where I take refuge. There you don’t have to hurt or experience heartache to dig out inspiration.” Borden says FLARES is a journey from beginning to end. "It's a story. Every song is a chapter, a moment, a struggle. It starts off sweet and joyous, but slowly you see a degression until you reach the end where somethings settles. Then you find enlightenment and freedom from the confinements" Since Alexa Borden’s 2010 debut of Speck in the Universe, which contained the hit “Will Love Ever Grow”, Borden has proven herself a profound and imaginative young songwriter. Produced by Alexa alone, and recorded in her home built studio, the music rekindles this self-taught pianists loss of spark in the outing of this sonic and bass dense album, FLARES. “I have been at war with myself for far too long...too sad. It’s never who I used to be. I want to make a ruckus. Make a statement, grab someone’s attention. I wrote this record to help me discover where I belong, guidance for my thoughts. And during the writing process I discovered that the moment I stop searching for where I belong is the moment that I’ll find it. FLARES is a testament just being who I need to be and accepting life for what it is”
