Artist Portrait

Alistair Gordon

voc, bvoc,
Rock and Pop

Alistair’s career as an artist began at a very early age. While still at school he formed and fronted his own bands and performed live in a variety of pubs, clubs and theatres all over the U.K. These early years helped him to gain valuable experience – listening, learning and crafting his songwriting and performing skills, so much so that by the time he was 18 he had signed his first music publishing deal with Chappell Aznavour, and at the same time was signed to 10cc’s management company Kennedy Street Enterprises. A year later after relentless gigging, he and bass player/writer Mark Holding, were signed to Polydor Records Worldwide under the band name Scott & Batische. Whilst working on their first album, the duo began a series of tours supporting acts from Split Enz, Ace, The Motors and Racing Cars to the then newly signed Sex Pistols. The early 1980s saw Alistair involved in a band called Sneaky Pierre, the members of whom would go on to feature in future ventures such as Radio Silence and Sad Café. It was in 1983 that Alistair had his first taste of success with a number 1 record in Spain as a member of the band Zu Zu Sharks and the song “Love Tumbles Down” on EMI. The band toured Britain and Europe extensively, but in 1984 Alistair left the band and was immediately signed as a solo artist by Ahmet Ertegun the founder and chairman of Atlantic Records U.S.A. This led to the release of two singles. The first “You Cause Chaos” was recorded at Revolution Studios in Manchester under the watchful eye of Martin Lawrence – with whom Alistair would co-own a studio in years to come. It was released in 1984 and was well received in mainland Europe. The second “Touch and Go” was released in 1985 and its launch was at a live fundraising concert scheduled to coincide with LiveAid. Again, most of the single’s success came in Europe. At the same time as writing and recording his debut album with Atlantic he was invited by Genesis keyboard supremo Tony Banks to be frontman/lead singer of Tony’s new band BankStatement recording and releasing an album on Virgin records. While the band achieved popular and critical acclaim in the UK, the album’s success mainly came in Europe and Japan. In between doing radio and television interviews, videos, live TV performances and a concert tour of Germany, Alistair also completed his first solo project in 1997, bringing together a talented collaboration of musicians and writers under the name Radio Silence to release an album of the same name. The album sold well in Europe and was followed up in 2001 by a second album “Sirens”. As a versatile session singer, Alistair has sung backing vocals on many comtemporary rock and pop albums from Eric Clapton, The Choir Boys, and The Who to Sad Cafe, Labi Siffre and Ralph McTell. He has also performed lead and backing vocals on several film sound tracks including The EMMY and BAFTA award winnning animated feature film “Wind In The Willows” and also sang the lead and backing vocals for the title song “California Dreaming” for the Warner Brothers film “The Big Tease”. The late 1990s saw Alistair writing, recording and performing live with long time friends Sad Café. In 2001 Alistair was invited to contribute to the album “A Tribute to Foreigner” – his performance of the song “I Don’t Want to Live Without You” bringing praise from Foreigner themselves. In 2007 Alistair performed with Russell Watson on his extensive sell-out Arena tour which finished off at the Royal Albert Hall. This live performance was recorded and released by Decca/Universal in May 2008. In 2008, having just completed another 5 week sell-out tour with Russell Watson, Alistair began writing and recording his third Radio Silence album in JM Recording Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden. The album “Whose Skin Are You Under Now” was released in July 2009 on Escape Music. 2011 saw Alistair working with a unique French band called XII Alfonso and a collaboration of more than 50 musicians to create a three disc musical telling of the life of Charles Darwin. The track “So Many Years” feature Alistair on lead vocals. Nowadays, while Alistair increasingly concentrates his efforts on songwriting, talent development and music production, his career as an artist is far from over. Are there plans for a fourth Radio Silence album? Let’s just say never say never…….
