Ami was born in Palembang, Sumatra and now lives on the island of Bali, Indonesia. He joined teenage bands when he was in high school. His performance highlights include the Bali Jazz Parade in 2000, the Nusa Dua World Music Festival Bali in 2001, the Nusa Dua Jazz Festival in 2004, and the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival in 2009 & 2010. He has also performed with Indonesian bands Kayane, Duotone and Soulmate. Ami joined Tropical Transit in 2002 as a vocalist, when one of the group’s original vocalists, Bobby, moved to Korea to perform in the hotel and club scene there. In 2010, he worked with Tropical Transit's leader Riwin on the album My Sexy Life.
