The debut album of the Norwegian power trio An Ananas asks a question; "Do You Hear What I Hear In The Scream?" The answer is provided by guitar, bass and drums, serving up big riffs and psychedelic melodies in what often is rather nerve-wrecking song structures. The piercing lyrics adds to the answer, often pondering on the existential anguish that resides in almost any scream. However, the album, as the question asked in its title, is also one about listening and interpreting: On how instrumentation and structure can create an immediate impression masking the lyrical content, as well as the other way around. With this album, the band asks whether anyone hear what they hear? The musical apporach offered throughout the album adds to this: It draws on alternative rock and classical guitar pop, oscillating between soothing vocal harmonies, thunderous bass riffs and dissonant and psychedelic guitars. Still, the quirky song structures, often fast paced and jerky, makes for a dizzying experience. No wonder the band has been likened to the unlikely combination of Lou Reed fronting The Residents. The album has been recorded in murky basements and in small apartments over the time of more than two years, capturing a band in movement and fully exploring the potentiality of the Do-It-Yourself ethos. The album art is designed by the award winning Magnus Voll Mathiassen / MVM. The record was mastered by John Golden, Golden Mastering, Ventura, California.
