Ancestral was depressive/atmospheric black metal band (with elements of what would later be coined as "blackgaze") from San Diego, California, USA. The band originally formed in 2007 by Brendan Shaouna under the name "Ancient Moonlight" and released a split with Asphyxia. Brendan ("B") soon changed the name to "Ancestral". Ancestral released a demo, two EPs and two splits (one with Merankorii and Njiqahdda, another with Wedard) all in 2008. The band remained a solo project for the entirety of its officially released material, but had started to expand into a full band prior to its breakup. A drummer "K" first joined in the band, but was quickly replaced by "H". When the band broke up in 2009, at least 5 songs had been recorded for Ancestral's debut full-length album "Insomnia, Colors & Hopelessness", scheduled for release on Abridged Pause Recordings.
