Andrew Filmer is a Malaysian violist, diverse performer proficient both in baroque techniques and new music, musicologist, conductor, educator, writer and public speaker. He currently lectures at Sunway University in Malaysia, and prior to that served on faculty at Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Mahidol University in Thailand. Filmer received a Master of Music degree from Indiana University, and continued his education in New Zealand, earning a PhD degree from the University of Otago in 2013. Outside of his classical and contemporary music activities, Andrew Filmer also played with The Troubles (2) jazz band in New Zealand. Throughout his intercontinental career, Andrew Filmer had been a principal violist at Selangor Symphony and several other prominent orchestras in Malaysia, and appeared on stage with solo recitals across the Southeast Asia, New Zealand, UK and Europe. He toured Japan with a New Zealand's ensemble Southern Sinfonia, and on several occasions conducted Musica Sinfonietta from Malaysia. Andrew is a member of Sutera Ensemble, and performs in a trio with violinist Mabel Wong and pianist Robin Lee. In 2017, Filmer co-curated educational content for Johor Bahru Classical Music Festival – the largest event of its kind in Malaysia. As a musicologist, Andrew Filmer had presented his research at the 39th International Viola Congress, Sydney Viola Conference, and other international events, and published articles in Strings and the Journal of the American Viola Society (JAVS) in the United States, String Praxis in Australia, and Crescendo in New Zealand. In 2011, Filmer presented his edition of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, based on the research published in JAVS earlier the same year. He is also an expert in computer software for academic and corporate presentations, and got a certification in UX from the University Of California, San Diego.
