Annette von Droste-Hülshoff was born into an aristocratic, Catholic family, on January 10, 1797, at Hülshoff near Münster in Westphalia. She became one of the most important German women poets of the 19th century, and amongst her best-known writings are the cycle of poems Das geistliche Jahr (The Spiritual Year) and the novella Die Judenbuche (The Jew's Beech). von Droste-Hülshoff died in May 1848 at Schloss Meersburg, probably from pneumonia.
