Antony Difrancesco
The A.D.D Ep

Album RO 2012 on Coquette Records label
Dance (Techno, House, Deep House)

This is a debut EP from the depths of London's thriving underground scene. Produced by Antony Difrancesco there is sure to be something to please ravers & audiophiles alike. 'Tricolour' is a dubby roller, with subtle grooves and steppy drum programming. Moving on to 'Shadow Flow', you can hear the artist experiment further with similar 'tech-step' rhythms. The incorporation of lush vocals and synths seduces you, a state quickly altered by the chunky, rolling drops. As the name suggests, 'GoDeep' is this EP's deepest track. The generous dub laden basslines are coupled with micro percussive patterns to send you in to the zone. Finally 'Callaway Dub' sees production mate Wiggy contribute with composition leaning toward the experimental realm of sound. Again your ears are guided through this track by a plethora of sounds that make for interesting listening. Support from Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Robert Dietz, Marco Carola, tINI, Luciano, Hector, Faster, Maximiljan, Loco Dice, Reboot, Tom Ellis, MHM One, Enzo Siragusa and many more. If you discount its supple, rolling bass, it's tech house; if you throw out the generally easy tempos, it's techno; if you settle into its low frequencies, it sounds straight out of a Bristol bedroom. But as many corners as you could back it into, it's hardly as scatterbrained as its title suggests. Simultaneously hyper-specific and broadly appealing, Antony Difrancesco's first solo release should have no problem slinking between scenes. Difrancesco builds these tracks to be alluringly large and small. Opener "Tricolor" has a beast of a kick, but it never manages to scatter the sizzling ambience it pounds through. Driven by tritone synth stabs and a bassline so low its pitch is nearly indiscernible, the rhythmically intricate "GoDeep" is flippant about melody but appealing regardless. Difrancesco grows moodier on "Shadow Flow," shifting between sticky, dubby calm and hi-hat-driven mania. "Callaway Dub," indebted to Villalobos at his spaciest, shrinks the bass and seems to lose a little of its distinctiveness as a result. Regardless, you're likely to hear more than enough of Difrancesco's own voice here. Words / Jordan Rothlein Published / Fri, 23 November 2012
