Jazz
From back cover: Armas (Art) Maiste was born in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, where he studied at the State Academy of Music. He later spent six years in Swededn at the State Academy in Stockholm, where he discovered jazz and became an enthusiastic exponent of the boogie-woogie piano style. In 1950 Art came to Canada and began a career which has covered club work, radio and TV performances, classical and variety programs. He has played with several top jazz musicians and arranges including Maynard Ferguson and Michel Legrand (see RCI 264 and 265 for his work with Ferguson). In addition, he has represented Canada at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. A versatile performer, Art is presently resident pianist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, a post he has occupied for several years. He frequently performs contemporary works and gives recitals of repertoire material. However, jazz remains his first love. He admires most of the great piano stylists, but expresses a particular liking (after boogie players) for George Shearing, Bud Powell, Bill Evans and Herby Hancock. Like them, he combines imaginative musical thinking with a solid technique. His interest in atonal music has led him to some interesting experiments in atonal jazz. On this recording, Art gives a bird's eye view of the history of jazz piano. Ragtime, boogie, stride piano, swing, bebop and beyond are all featured in faithful interpretations of the styles of some of the great piano players through the years.
