Formed in 1996, Asura was originally a duo composed of Charles Farewell, and Vincent Villuis. In 1998, Christopher Maze joined the group. In 2001, Vincent Villuis left the group to concentrate on his new project Aes Dana, and was replaced the same year by Alex Ackerman. Since July 2005, after the departure of Christopher Maze and Alex Ackerman, Asura became Charles Farewell's solo project.
