A professional drum set percussionist and educator of 25 years, Beau Stocker has performed and taught in his home country of Canada, the UK, and various countries in Europe and East Africa. He has studied and performed numerous styles of music including improvised music, Javanese Gamelan, jazz, blues, rock/pop, Cuban, Brazilian and Sudanese music. Beau’s music teaching career has encompassed private drum set and percussion tuition, workshop leader and University lecturer. While living in Sudan, he developed and taught a Percussion degree programme for the University of Sudan in addition to working as a PYP music teacher at the Khartoum International Community School. More recently, Beau has delivered workshops and training sessions for the University of York. He is a highly flexible professional, both in one-to-one tuition and also classroom based teaching, and continues to develop his skills as an academic educator. Contact Beau for details. An honours graduate of the Humber College Music program (Toronto Canada), BFA recipient from York University (Toronto Canada), and MA graduate from The University of York (UK) his academic and performance careers have existed simultaneously; each fuelling the progress of the other. Having now moved to the UK to pursue his academic interests, Beau has been a member of the Leeds improvised music association through the involvement of improvised music group Trio VD and is continuing his pursuits of improvised music performance in ensemble and solo formats. His current PhD research at the University of York UK feeds this performance repertoire in the research of percussion performance practices that utilize timbre. This encompasses exploration of the various timbres of un-tuned percussion in improvised performance coupled with the musical inspiration derived from his research of Eastern African rhythms. His research has also included the development of a graphic score system that visualises his own personal unique language of timbre exploration on the drum set and un-tuned percussion.
