A.k.a. The Lord Diabolus
Beherit was formed in Rovaniemi, Finland, in 1989, by Holocausto (vocals/guitar), Daemon Fornication (bass) and Sodomatic Slaughter (drums). ("Beherit" is the Syriac name for Satan.) In 1990 they released two demo tapes, Seventh Blasphemy and Demonomancy, as well as the Morbid Rehearsals cassette. They also gained a reputation for having an extreme live show, replete with severed pigs' heads, blood, fire, spikes, even bringing a goat on stage. The notorious German label Turbo Music signed the band, releasing the Dawn Of Satan's Millenium picture disc 7" and the Death Yell / Beherit split 7" in 1991. Turbo Music sent the band a "generous" $100 to record their debut album; the band preferred to spend that money on booze and drugs instead. However, Turbo Music went ahead and compiled the Demonomancy demo and the Dawn Of Satan's Millenium 7" and released this as the "debut album" The Oath Of Black Blood in 1991. After this, the band terminated their dealings with Turbo Music. In order to prevent trouble with Turbo Music, later in 1991 Beherit released their third demo Down There... under the name The Lord Diabolus . The next year they released the Promo 1992 tape, which led to a deal with Spinefarm Records. In 1993 the full-length album Drawing Down The Moon was released. Shortly afterwards the other members left the band, leaving Holocausto alone. He recorded the Messe Des Morts 7" by himself which was released in 1994 by Necropolis Records; this was later reissued on the Messe Des Morts / Angelcunt (Tales Of Desecration) split CD with Archgoat. In 1994 the band, now Holocausto's solo project, released the electronic/synth album H418ov21.C; at this point the project had turned toward ambient music. Continuing in this style, the Electric Doom Synthesis album was released in 1996; Holocausto eventually ended Beherit after its release. In 1999 a posthumous compilation was released, Beast Of Beherit - Complete Worxxx, featuring studio, demo and live tracks from throughout the band's history. In 2008 the original members Holocausto and Sodomatic Slaughter reformed the band, now as a four-piece featuring new members Ancient Corpse Desekrator and Abyss, Twisted Baptizer. The following year saw the release of Engram, the first new Beherit album since 1996 and the band's first black metal recording since 1993.
