Milton Tasker "Bill" Putnam (1920–1989) was a renowned American audio engineer, songwriter, producer, studio designer and businessman who has been described as "the father of modern recording". He was the inventor of the modern recording console and is recognized as a key figure in the development of the postwar commercial recording industry. The first studio he founded was Universal Recording Studio in Chicago. In 1957 he went to Los Angeles and founded United Recording Corp., parent company of the famous United Recording Studios. He later purchased Western Recorders next door and merged the two entities, creating the famous United Western Studios.
