Singer / Musician of Country
A.k.a. Billy Smith (11)
Country/bluegrass singer, guitarist & songwriter. Billy grew up in Caswell County, North Carolina, picking and singing with his brother Terry Smith (8), father Pat, and mother, Hazel Smith, noted country music radio and television personality. Carlton Haney invited them to play the historic first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Virginia as the Smith Family. They also toured with Arthur Smith And His Cracker-Jacks. Billy moved to Nashville, Tennessee as a teenager in the early 1970s. During this time, he befriended his idol Bill Monroe, working for him as a farm hand during the day, while evenings were spent hanging with and learning from music legends like Shel Silverstein, Waylon Jennings, Harlan Howard, Marijohn Wilkin, John Hartford, Tompall Glaser, the Dr. Hook band, and veteran bluegrassers Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs, and Benny Martin, to name a few. He has toured and/or recorded with Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Curly Seckler, Jimmy Martin, Hubert Davis, Vern Gosdin, Marty Stuart, Mike Snider (3), Guy Clark, Craig Duncan, The Whites, and the list goes on. He has toured several foreign countries, including Canada, Scotland, Japan, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, the Congo, Zaire, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Liberia.
