Blues (Harmonica Blues, Chicago Blues)
Birmingham Jones 1965 session and Kid Thomas 1957 session. Birmingham Jones Session - Chicago 1965 Birmingham Jones vocals and harmonica with unknown piano, two guitars, two tenor saxes and drums Kid Thomas Session = Cincinnati 1957 Kid Thomas vocals and harmonica with unknown piano, guitar and drums ON FRONT COVER: "Featuring the Chicago blues harmonica of Birmingham Jones" ON FRONT COVER: "Featuring the California blues harmonica of Kid Thomas" ON FRONT COVER: "Never previously released" ON FRONT COVER: "14 stunning performances of post-war big-city harmonica stylings" Track A4 "Birmingham Bounce" and Track A5 "Taters And Matos" are both instrumental tracks. NOTES ABOUT TRACK A5 "Taters And Matos": This instrumental track isn't by Kid Thomas, it is by Hubert Sumlin. As per the Les Fancourt & Bob McGrath "The Blues Discography 1943 - 1970" book and on Chills And Fever, and here: www.wirz.de/music/birmjone , among other places, the instrumental Track A5 "Taters And Matos" is actually credited to Hubert Sumlin who plays guitar on this and credits Birmingham Jones on harmonica. Also note that this track is listed as "Taters And Matos" on the back cover, but listed as "Taters And Mators" on the LP Label. Of further interest is the fact that it seems that Birmingham Jones is not on this track at all, as there is no harmonica to be heard on the track at all! NOTE ABOUT UNLISTED TRACK B6 "Beaulah Come Back (Take ?)": Interestingly, there are actually 15 tracks on this release, not 14 as shown by the track listing on the back cover and LP labels. There are 9 tracks on side B, not 8 as listed. The unlisted track is B6, which is an unknown take of Kid Thomas' song titled "Beaulah Come Back" (which I've seen spelled "Beaulah" on most releases, but also spelled as "Beulah" on at least one release). There are at least 5 known takes of this song (as seen on Here's My Story), and I haven't had a chance to determine exactly which take is used on this release so I have labeled this unlisted Track B6 as "Beaulah Come Back (Take ?)" for now.
