Band, *1995 PT
Rock and Electronic
Portuguese experimental rock band formed in 1995 by Karkov and Vald'jiu. The band is known for their highly theatrical live shows that involve elaborate & extravagant alien-themed costumes utilizing inventive concepts and instruments. In addition, they have developed their own dialect known as "Karkovian" which is used in their lyrics. This groups ever-changing esthetics provide an attention-grabbing image which is the trade mark that originated the buzz around the band’s music, which in the beginning, was quite different; something like a rough-hewn fusion of the outer edges of contemporary electronic pop and global dance-floor grooves, blended with raw rock riffs. Since the bands inception, their aural concept has progressed, crossing all latitudes of various cultures, borrowing and developing sounds from both the ancestral/traditional and the exotic. Within these, they have incorporated the use of the aboriginal instrument didgeridoo, Tibetan tubes, Klezmer inspired pieces, frantic rhythms, modern melting electronics and tribalism, resulting in their unique 'galactic cosmic' sound. Vald'jiu created the Bambuleco and Kalachakra (or Kalashakra) instruments. He describes the Bambuleco "as having 8 cords and assimilates the capacities of a bass and a guitar" and the Kalashakre as "a wonderful baby that comes with 2 necks (as in guitar neck), and one extra knob. With the knob I'm playing tremoloes. One of the necks is a Bambuleco, the other is a mix of an electric sitar and Indian sounds".
