Contains an insert reading: i was programming 91X in san diego when blink first got together….. they recorded and released a cassette tape, and played a boat-load of all ages shows. when they re-entered the studio to record the follow-up CD cheshire cat, the producer O had told me how amazing the band was live….he invited me to go check them out….the show was so mind blowing for me…. i witnessed a packed house of kids join' off! there were more naked people on stage than the broadway version of "hair" …..the songs were almost a side bar to the wild stuff that was happening on stage….mark, tom and the old drummer scott were without a doubt the best live thing to come out of san diego in a while….after O finished cheshire cat, we went over the songs to figure out if there was a track that would stand up to the huge bands of the day: nirvana, pearl jam, sound garden, etc. it was between "m&m's" and "wasting time" … it was decided that we would put the song "m&m's" into our regular rotation and see what the folks of san diego would think. i was shocked. within two weeks it was the #1 most requested track…at first we thought it was just all the blink and trying to jam the request lines…..but it was obviously starting to make some ? with the pedestrian 91x listeners….. we sat back and watched as those old shows at soma went from the half club to the full club…jam packed with people of all ages. from the old school punks who yearned for the old days, to young kids that loved the humor of mark and tom, and the amazing shit they would get up to on stage…..i aw them played at sxsw in austin, texas and still pull the same huge reaction from a crowd that did not know or care who they were…. i also saw them play the belly-up tavern in selena beach, california where the powers that be from mca records would show up and eventually signed them…. the belly-up is also the location for some of the "adam's song" video shoot, as well as some of the footage for the "man overboard" video….this is also the place where we recorded this interview on a sunday morning, way too early for most rock stars…. bear in mind that while we were talking, the film crew for the video shoot and the crew from mtv's "making the video" were running about with a million cameras. tons of screaming teenaged extras were just outside the door to the club. and a line was forming around the block as word was leaking out about the video shoot. is the center of all of this mass confession….blink 182….as if they were still playing garages in san diego….not an ego in sight….mark even lent me his video camera to record this interview. sure, they are all over mtv and everyone knows their name ……but i can say in all honesty… they haven't changed a bit… they just have more fans than they did in 1995. a ton more. michael halloran september 2000
