Band,
Formed in 1967 in St. Joseph, Missouri, the Fantastics (Tom Little and Monte Yager on guitar, plus Tony Guardado on bass) had been known as The Quiet. They joined up with drummer Bobby Meeks, who ushered the group into Cavern for one purpose: to cut a demo to send to Happening '68, a Dick Clark production hosted by Paul Revere & the Raiders' Mark Lindsay. That demo hit the spot for Lindsay, and the group made the 1500-mile trek west to Hollywood for a May 4, 1968, lip-synched taping of "Tobacco Road," a hit for the Nashville Teens back in '64. But the Fantastics' iteration didn't jibe with guest judge Brenton Wood, and the group returned home to play a series of uninspiring gigs at various strip clubs, most notably Chez Don's "Distinctly Different" Cocktail Lounge before breaking up shortly thereafter.
