Robert Louis Ridarelli was born on April 26, 1942 in the Italian neighborhood of south Philadelphia. At age six he began playing the drums as he admired Gene Krupa. From 1951, at age nine, through 1954 he was the drummer on Paul Whitman's "Teen Club" television show. Whitman had trouble pronouncing the name Ridarelli and changed it to Rydell. Later in 1954 Bobby joined a group called Rocco & the Saints which featured another local youngster, Frankie Avalon, on trumpet. Bobby's first commercial release came in 1958 with "Fatty Fatty" on the Veko label out of Baltimore. There were two other uncharted releases in 1959, "Please Don't Be Mad" and "All I Want Is You", that preceded the string of hits that appear on this CD. In 1963, Bobby played the part of Hugo Peabody alongside Ann-Margret in the movie "Bye Bye Birdie". By 1965 the hits had come to an end but not before racking up "30 Big Ones". (Liner notes from CD)
