Singer of Rock and Pop
A.k.a. Brian Bastow
British pop singer (May 5, 1944 - March 22, 2008). Bastow, who was later nicknamed "Ginge," was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK. His family relocated to Australia when he was four years old. As a teenager, Bastow sang in clubs, on the radio and on TV. In November 1966, he was singing at the coastal holiday resort "Surfers' Paradise," where he was discovered by a European pop group called The Shake Spears. They were in need of a singer and took Bastow with them back to Belgium. He stayed with the group for a couple of months and recorded a handful of songs with them, but left the group in March 1967 in order to pursue a solo career. The Shake Spears backed him on his first solo release, "Poinciana," (under the alias "The Hi-Five") which became a nation-wide hit in Belgium. Bastow continued to release records (nine 45s and two LPs) until 1970. He reportedly went back to Sydney, but nothing is known of his whereabouts until his passing in 2008.
