From T/4258 liner notes: About Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Gwynne Horrocks, K.C.B., K.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., LL.D. (Hon.): Sir Brian Horrocks trained for the Army at Sandhurst, and was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment in 1914, serving in France and Belgium, and in Russia in 1919. He distinguished himself again doling the 1939-45 war, notably in the North African campaigns where he sustained and recovered from serious wounds. He was General Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Command, in 1946, and General Officer Commanding, British Army of the Rhine in 1948. Sir Brian re tired from the Army in 1949, and was appointed Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, House of Lords, the same year, a post which he held until 1963. Sir Brian's engaging personality has made him a firm and perennial television favourite in post war years. He has interpreted military history and battles, ancient and modern, in terms which were universally understood and appreciated, and his 'Tunes of Glory' series, several programmes of which featured the Kneller Hall band under Colonel Brown, was a particular success, linking famous marches with historical battles and the regiments and corps which fought in them.
