Brian Siskind Live at the Rothko Chapel (40th Anniversary) July 16, 2011 The program is a guided sonic meditation, acoustically tailored and specifically crafted solely for and in reverence of the sacred space of the Rothko Chapel. Ambient meditative drones, stitched into collage with environmental field recordings and abstract textures form an amalgam of sound that create a singular experience for the listener, toward transcendence. From documented rituals of Bhutan monks in Brooklyn, to the birds in the ruins of Pompeii, and an alternating portrait of rural and urban life from across the United States and Europe, the resulting sonic images are a portrait of not only Siskind’s perspective, but of the collective auditory experience. About the Rothko Chapel The Rothko Chapel, founded by Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil, was dedicated in 1971 as an intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief. A tranquil meditative environment inspired by the mural canvases of Russian born American painter Mark Rothko (1903-1970), the Chapel welcomes over 60,000 visitors each year, people of every faith from all parts of the world. As an art form, music speaks an international language and has the capacity to bind diverse people together through a shared experience. It can nurture interfaith understanding and has the transformative power to enlighten the mind and spirit." "One of the great joys in my life has always been to discover music that moves me in such a way that is obvious that the music has been made so purely out of a love and respect for sound, the power of music and the infinite ways that it can move you. Brian Siskind's "Live At the Rothko Chapel" is the kind of experience in music that is a treasure to find." - Michael Shrieve
