Now, after 40 years of working with those pioneers, Cameron presents his debut album as a leader. With the help of old friends Sheila Jordan on vocals and Dewey Redman on tenor saxophone, and young titans Dave Ballou on trumpet and Leon Parker on drums, Brown links the past and present with music that digs into the tradition, then heads for unexplored territory. There?s a soulful and stirring reading of the standard "For All We Know"; two modern ?standards? -- "Art Deco" and "Remembrance" -- from the pen of Cameron?s old boss Don Cherry; a rare Ornette Coleman tune, "What Reason Could I Give?"; an extended, free-form romp, "Double Arc Jake," from the pen of another of Cameron?s compatriots, the late Don Pullen; and two smart and heartfelt originals by Cameron himself.
