Charles de Gaulle (November 22, 1890, Lille - November 9, 1970, Colombey-les-Deux-Églises) was a French general and statesman. General de Gaulle led the Forces françaises libres (Free French forces) during World War II. He later founded the French fifth Republic in 1958 and served as its first president from 1959 to 1969.
