Charlie Smithers, Born in Shoreditch, London in 1927, Died 8th May 2007 was one of Britain's best known club comedians and the only comic to have signed a three-year contract with the London Palladium. Renowned for his cockney humour, he appeared in top cabaret venues throughout the country, as well as leading London hotels, including the Dorchester, Savoy, Cafe Royal and Grosvenor House. On nine occasions he performed in shows for the Royal Family. He served in the Fleet Air Arm during the Second World War. On being demobbed, he entered a talent contest at a dance hall in London as a singer, but discovered that his forte was comedy.
