Singer / Composer of Rock and Pop
Chas Mills was a session singer in the early 1970s. Not to be confused with the classical composer Charles Mills or songwriter Charles Mills (2), who often wrote with Mike Leander. Along with singer Tony Burrows, he was enlisted in 1974 by husband & wife team John Carter (Ivy League) and Gillian Shakespeare to sing on the recording of "Beach Baby". This was a 'one-hit wonder' performed on Jonathan King's label as the band "First Class" (3). It's chart success and a follow-up single, "Bobby Dazzler", led to an album being made. A group was hastily formed for promoting this, as both Carter and Burrows had no further interest. The touring band, who did not perform on the album, were: Robin Shaw (bass); Del John (vocals); Spencer James (guitar); Clive Barrett (keyboards); Eddie Richards (drums). A follow-up album "SST" in 1976 by the original line-up was a flop and "First Class" was no more. Vocalist Chas Mills left the music business to run a restaurant in North London.
