Chicago Sound Map began in 2007 as an annual new music festival. It was initiated by Boris Hauf, and curators of the festival includes himself, Michael Hartman, Brian Labycz (Koura) and D Bayne. Each year a selection of composers is invited to devise musical systems that focus on the dualism of composition and improvisation. A large ensemble of improvisers interprets each composer's proposal. Each composition has limited rehearsal (depending on the amount of composition from 90-180 mins per piece plus an extended soundcheck). In 2007-2010 Chicago Sound Map festivals took place annually and invited composers were: Olivia Block, Brent Gutzeit, Burkhard Stangl, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Michael Zerang, Dudley Bayne, Ernst Karel, Kevin Davis, Jim Baker, Kyle Bruckmann, Don Malone, Adam Sonderberg, Judith Unterpertinger, Jeb Bishop. In 2008 Kuro Neko Music released the CD Performs Compositions By Olivia Block And Ernst Karel which documents that year's performance at the Chicago Cultural Center.
