Born in Edison, NJ, Dean was taught to play guitar by his older brother, bass player David Foti. Graduating from high school in 1992, Dean went on to study an eclectic range of guitar styles, including jazz, folk, country, pop, and the blues. After leading his own trio for several years, he joined Mississippi-born Big Jack Johnson's band, the Oilers, along with Foti. After four years with the group, they left to form the Christopher Dean Band.
