A.k.a. Jaap Kattevilder
City Lights Not a lot of people mention winter as their favorite season. City Lights, a 19 year old Dutch producer of dreamy instrumental Hip-Hop music, associates winter with inspiration and good vibes. On his debut album “Winter All Year”, the influence that winter has had is hard to miss. From eerie synthesizers that seem to pierce through your eardrum, to warm bathes of sweet melodies, the melancholic winter-feel is always present. On top of this, City Lights ofcourse adds his typical stuttering drums and deep basslines to all of the songs. It’s already difficult to capture his sound in words, but as a person Jaap Kattevilder (City Lights’ real name) appears to be even more complicated. For example, he has had a drive to showcase his own view on music to the world since childhood, but he detests being idolized on the other hand. On the contrary, City Lights is the type to love all human beings, and he sees it as his mission to make them cry as well as laugh. He has chosen music as his ultimate instrument to show his emotions to people. On his debut album “Winter All Year” he was assisted by his experienced fellow townsmen Darin Guermonprez (known for his work for DAC, De Colombiaanse Bloedgroep) and Bobby Littlejohn (E-Ville Media). “Winter All Year” marks the start of City Lights’ musical career, and gives a good impression of what he intends to make for as long as possible: atmospherical soundscapes, combined with raw and aggressive elements. City Lights’ next big project is already in the pocket; the entire production of Dutch rapper DiceCream’s third studio album. A lot of music can be expected from City Lights in the nearby future. The young talent is ready for some powermoves, and he’s not planning to stop sharing his vision on music anytime soon.
