First was started by Tim Dralle as Concussion in 1987 with Jerry Bizon and John Keener (both later in The Spudmonsters), Ian Shipley (Breaker) and drummer Steve Johnson (later of Sinister, recently of Icarus Witch). Ian left the band to return to Breaker, setting off several lineup changes and Concussion eventually evolving into Civil Disobedience (a name chosen by Keener). The first complete Civil Disobedience lineup of Dralle, Ed Stephens, Scott Dolan & Keener had their first rehearsal on April 30 1988, and recorded their first demo just under 2 months later on June 28th. In early July, Keener would be replaced by vocalist Glenn Hudson, whom Stephen's knew from high-school, and before the end of the month they completed their second demo, a re-recording of the first demo songs (plus a new one "We Know"). In the final days of July, after only one show with this lineup, the first days of August would see Scott Dolan replaced with Joe Twardzik, and a high-school friend of Dralle's, Tom Rojack, joining on second guitar. With this lineup Civil Disobedience played their first show, at September's Night Club in Cleveland on 8-7-88. This lineup (Dralle, Hudson, Stephens, Rojack, Twardzik) cemented the bands presence in the local scene, gained them significant local airplay, and recorded/released two very highly regarded demos, "A.F.F." in November 1988 and "Whose To Blame" in January 1989. In mid-1989 founding guitarist and main-songwriter Tim Dralle left the band, kicking off another period of numerous lineup changes (Rojack and Twardzik being the only members to stay throughout this entire period) and guitarist Tom Rojack taking on vocal duties as well. Original Concussion guitarist Jerry Bizon and then-Sinister bassist Ed Stephens both returned to Rojack's new version of Civil Disobedience (briefly) in 1990 for a self-titled demo tape consisting mainly of "classic" Civil Disobedience material but including two new songs written by Tom ("Fighting Stop" and "Judgement Day"). During this era Civil Disobedience's live set consisted of a mix of Dralle's songs, and new songs by Tom such as "Tribute" (that would later become "Tribute To The Deceased" by Blood of Christ. Rojack led the new Civil Disobedience into 1991 when they recruited bassist Tim Datsun. The lineup of Rojack, Twardzik and Datsun continued to write new material and as the style drifted farther and farther from the "classic" Civil Disobedience style of Dralle's songs they ended Civil Disobedience and started Blood of Christ.
