Clifford Edward Thornton III (September 6, 1936(?) - November 25, 1989(?)) was an American composer, trombonist, trumpeter, political activist, and educator. His work (associated with Avant-garde music and free jazz of the 1960s and 1970s) intentionally abrogated established musical and political boundaries, and had significant effect on his contemporaries.
