The history of Cod Head dates back to 1995 London, England, when a group of DJs, promoters, and club afficionados came together to form the crew that came to be known as OXYGEN FUNK. In a quest to bring all that was right with the London club scene back to Japan, they crossed the ocean and began holding regular events in Tokyo, changing the musical landscape in Japan forever. The first album to come from the OXYGEN FUNK scene was entitled "Basement Reality" (Nippon Crown '99), a compilation featuring the talents of numerous artists in the crew. Among these artists, Cod Head showed that a mixture of breakbeats, techno and dub could serve as a meeting point for great music, and they have been continuing to hone their approach in a number of follow up releases. More recently, the year 2002 saw a release of the Cod Head 12 inch "Corner to Corner" on Alex Paterson's BADORB label. Cod Head's live performances have also proved to hold to this vision, while at the same time remaining unpredictable and exciting. Turntables, samplers, trumpets, guitars, and sometimes an entire band is necessary to complete the massive sound that Cod Head creates live. They have opened for renowned music-makers Alex Paterson, Richard Fearless, DJ Krush, Rockers Hi-Fi, Doc Scott, and many others, always showing a desire to challenge the conventional. TATSULOW from Pickin' Mushroom Recordings A&R continues to lead this project through its many incarnations, supported by a number of musicians both in and around the OXYGEN FUNK scene. Presently, Cod Head's core members consist of Maki Mannami on vocals, Cal Lyall on table-top guitar and electronics, and Vanao on sound redistribution duties.
