Band,
Highly experimental electronic and acoustic duo featuring brothers Jeff & Greg Carney. The group was formed under the premise that electronic music could be approached along the lines of improvisation more commonly heard in Free Jazz and Experimental Rock. Henry Cow, Music Improvisation Company, Anthony Braxton, Derek Bailey and the like were sources of influence, but with an additional, unique twist of humor. The album was a radical departure from Jeff Carney's more melodic solo work. The recordings were also the first to feature Greg Carney's so-called "Synthar.” This was a custom made unit conceived of by Greg Carney and built by electronics engineer Joe Andrews. It featured a guitar with slack strings which connected to a Minimoog and was truly a one-of-a-kind guitar synthesizer. The album was also unique in that put forth the idea that instruments with which a musician had almost no experience could be utilized and combined with those with which he had learned more extensively. In particular, Greg Carney has been playing Violin for less than two weeks and Clarinet for only a matter of days when the recordings took place. The album was recorded completely live with no overdubs.
