Concert Royal was one of Britain's earliest "authentic-instrument" ensembles. Formed in the early 1970s, the group has retained its original membership to this day. With the assistance of an award from the Arts Council, the group set about researching and performing several of the secular chamber cantatas which were written for solo voice and small ensemble in the eighteenth century. Concert Royal are: Margarette Ashton (soprano) Peter Harrison (baroque flutes) Rachel Gray (cello) John Treherne (harpsichord and square piano).
