A.k.a. Shelton Dunaway & The Cupcakes
An American swamp pop band from Louisiana, led by Huey Thierry, also known as "Cookie". He originally shared lead vocals and saxophone with Shelton Dunaway. Note that the band can be credited in several different ways, depending on who was singing the lead. The band was formed in 1953 as "The Boogie Ramblers", and they made their first recording in 1955, "Cindy Lou" b/w "Such As Love". By 1956 Thierry became the lead singer of the band, and eventually the band was renamed to "Cookie and the Cupcakes". They recorded their most known song, "Mathilda" in 1958, and it is regarded as the unofficial anthem of swamp pop. Thierry unexpectedly, and without an explanation, moved to California in the mid-1960's, and left the band. He was replaced by Lil' Alfred Babineaux, but due to the decline in popularity of swamp pop, the band was disbanded in the early 1970's. In 1992 pianist Ernest Jacobs found Thierry from Los Angeles, and managed to persuade him to return to Louisiana. Cookie and the Cupcakes were reunited with Thierry, Jacobs, Dunaway and guitarist Marshall LeDee in the line-up. Thierry passed away in 1997, after which the band was led by Lil' Alfred again, until his death in 2006.
