Critical Band was a British microtonal instrumental ensemble, established in 1990 by James Wood (4) concurrently with a Centre for Microtonal Music in London. The group had been actively participating in the In Tune? regular weekend of microtonal music, organized by Wood at the Barbican Centre. Critical Band also released a few albums, including a CD of James Wood's compositions, Two Men Meet, Each Presuming The Other To Be From A Distant Planet / Phainomena / Venancio Mbande Talking With The Trees. The ensemble also premiered Two men meet… at the 1995 BBC Proms. The group was disbanded upon the closure of the Centre for Microtonal Music in the late-nineties due to a lack of funding.
