Band, 1992-1996
A.k.a. John Alan Kennedy, Don Avera
Cyclops Joint was founded in 1991 as the solo electronic project of John Alan Kennedy, who was at the time a member of Jesus Penis, a heavy in the Houston Texas experimental scene. Don Avera joined in 1992 and Cyclops Joint functioned as a duo (with occasional guests, notably David Gilden) until Kennedy relocated to New York City in 1995. Avera went on to form Mortal Engines. Having focused primarily on playing drums since the mid-1990's, Kennedy began recording new electronic music again around 2005, though with no intention of releasing anything. This period did give rise to the collaborative project Double Dunce, electronic collage based on an international exchange of DAT tapes with Paul Winstanley (Dave Dove Paul Duo, Sci Hi, Audible 3, Music for Hard Times). Cyclops Joint was effectively dead until Kennedy returned to Houston in 2012 and Richard Ramirez (Black Leather Jesus, etc) asked him to play a gig. The name was resurrected just in case somebody from the old days happened to see the flyer for the show. Since then, Cyclops Joint has continued to perform live and has released approximately 21 digital albums, focused largely on ambient feedback and percussive textures, with more on the horizon. Kennedy continues to write & record songs under his own name, and to play drums in an improv duo with Dane Rousay, and in the improv psych rock trio Morning Scales the Mountain with Tom Carter and Andre Ramiro.
