Deng Xiaoping (courtesy name Xixian; Simplified Chinese: 邓小平, Traditional Chinese: 鄧小平; 22 August 1904 - 19 February 1997) was a Chinese politician who was the paramount leader of the People's Republic of China from 1978 until his retirement in 1989. After Chairman Mao Zedong's death in 1976, Deng led China through far-reaching market-economy reforms.
