Singer of Dance
A.k.a. Thomas Tolbert
A stage actor, dancer and singer, DJTOMT, did his vinyl due diligence starting in the late 80's amassing a world-class techno and house collection while delving into the underground house music and "vogue" scene in downtown Washington, DC. Thomas practiced his craft in makeshift suburban studios in Virginia and Maryland with mentors from the "House of Aviance": Jean-Philippe Aviance, Kevin Aviance, Paul Aviance (Kindergarten). A break came in '92 when he partnered with Catastrophic Productions becoming a resident DJ for the first and largest successful rave-styled event in the DC area. The legendary RAVE party revived an entire neighborhood in downtown DC while packing over 1700 inside the defunct radio station, WUST's headquarters (now the 9:30 Club). Lines reached around the block every Saturday night attracting ravers from nearby Baltimore, New York City, Long Island, New York, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh PA, and points south including Virginia and North Carolina. Soon, the production sought larger venues in nearby warehouse districts which spearheaded an incredibly vibrant underground dance music scene unlike anything seen in the Baltimore/Washington corridor before, or since. Tom continued to book guest spots at raves and clubs in the area eventually landing a Saturday night residency at "The Vault". Other appearances included: Future Rave, Ultraworld, Tracks DC, The Fifth Column, The 18th Street Lounge, The Paradox (Baltimore), Fever, Buzz, Nation, The Zoo Club, The Edge, Club Zei, Kindergarten, Eldborg (Reykjavik, Iceland), Café de Paris (London, England). Thomas relocated to Brooklyn, NY in '96 after a collaboration with alumnis from The University Of North Carolina School Of The Arts at Saint-Marks-Church at the Bowery, writing the score and performing modern dance for a mixed arts evening with director James Hall (Kinky Boots, Broadway). Thomas began collaborations with Peace Bisquit productions around 2002 and continues to produce and collect dance music.
