A.k.a. Ronald Engels
Psy-trance DJ and party organizer from the Netherlands, active since the 90’s. He is co-manager of Sourcecode Transmissions and was involved in former labels Adodisc and 3rd Mind Records. Over the years many different styles of dance music passed his hands, but since the nineties he plays primarily (goa/psy) trance; in particular progressive psy-trance since this style came to rise in the 00's. In 2009 he became a member of the Iono Music DJ team. Zen was always charmed by electronic music. He enjoyed listening to synthesizer music, like JM Jarre, Vangelis, Kraftwerk, and space out. In 1983 he heard electronic hip hop music and he started collecting music, learning to mix using his cassettes and records. He visited his first warehouse acid house party in 1989. His DJ sets grew more eclectic and he grabbed the attention of organizers and promotors. Since that time Zen has been organizing club nights and parties, such as in the Mazzo (2) (Ordeals In Sound) & Trance Buddha (Doors Of Perception) and currently in Club Lite (Shangri La Events) - on occasion also booking international artists. With weekly gigs in Amsterdam Zen co-built a dedicated crowd. His organizational skills gained him international contacts and he has played many of his sets abroad. DJ Zen can be considered a pioneer of the electronic and (psychedelic) trance scene in The Netherlands, a movement that he was a part of but which he helped bring to fruition as well.
