A.k.a. Dániel Péter Biró

Dániel Péter Biró is an associate professor of composition and music theory at the University of Victoria, in Canada. He recently completed a commissioned composition for the Neue Vocalsolisten, premiered at the ECLAT Festival in Stuttgart, Germany, and coedited The String Quartets of Béla Bartók: Tradition and Legacy in Analytical Perspective (Oxford University Press, 2014). During his time at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Biró is completing the composition cycle titled Mishpatim (Laws), for voices, ensemble, and electronics. Setting text from the Hebrew Bible, he will investigate historical and semiotic relationships between music, text, and meaning via contemporary music composition. The composition cycle will be recorded at the Experimentalstudio of the SWR in Freiburg, Germany, and released by the recording label Neos. Biró received his PhD from Princeton University; his dissertation examines historical relationships between orality, memory, and notational development in Hungarian laments, Jewish Torah recitation, and early Christian plainchant. In 2006 he was a research fellow at the University of Victoria Centre for Studies in Religion and Society. In 2011 he was a visiting professor at Utrecht University, where he undertook computational research of Jewish and Islamic chant as practiced in the Netherlands. He has been commissioned by major festivals and ensembles (Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Toronto New Music Concerts) and has won international prizes for his work (Giga-Hertz-Award for electronic music, Kodály Prize).
