David Hayes

A.k.a. David Hayes

Legendary Bay Area, California scenester. After releasing a series of cassette compilations of local East Bay punk and hardcore bands and working on Maximum Rock 'n' Roll's "Turn It Around" compilation, David Hayes co-founded Lookout! Records (along with Lawrence Livermore) in 1988 to document the burgeoning underground punk scene that was centered around Berkeley's "Gilman Street Project." Hayes was responsible for releasing some of the most legendary and influential recordings of the late 1980s East Bay punk scene (including releases by Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine, Sewer Trout, Stikky, Isocracy, and many others). Hayes left Lookout! Records in 1989 after two years. In David Hayes' words, "When I quit, I told [lawrence Livermore] I wanted nothing to do with the label, for better or worse, thereby screwing myself out of at least a million dollars with one simple verbal statement..." Hayes would go on to start Very Small Records and Too Many Records and is now based in Portland, Oregon.
